PLAYERS COMMENTS: Built in 1993, this magnificent course, carved out of an old quarry, is
rated in the top ten of "America's Top State Golf Courses" by Golf Digest. It is
in the top 75 Upscale Courses. The views of San Antonio (especially at dusk) and the
surroundings are so stunning that local players keep going back just for the scenery. But
don't lose yourself in sightseeing. You need to concentrate on the golf. It is everything
golf should be. The front nine plays through open fields and alongside streams, giving it
a decidedly links feel. There is water which comes into the picture on a number of holes
on the front.
After making the turn you find out where it course gets its name. You
play in a huge, abandoned rock quarry, with steep walls that go up, up, up, almost 100
feet on three sides. One of the holes is called "Escape from Alcatraz," and
another is aptly named "Reload." It's not for the faint of heart, as you will
see when you tee off over a deep canyon to the fairway on the other side. The clubhouse
has a new upscale restaurant which is fast becoming a place to be seen by locals. The
service and amenities are first class. This one must be played while visiting San Antonio
if possible.
Distance: About 15 minutes from
downtown. Take Hwy 281 north and exit East Basse Road. The entrance to the clubhouse is on
the right.
Note: This is a sister course to Tapatio Springs Resort and Conference
Center.
